Zinwell ZAT-970A Digital to Analog TV Converter Box

I got my new converter box with the knowledge that the only complaint was the remote doesn't last long. So far, my remote is working fine. It has been about a month since I got it and the reception is fine, the options are great and the set up is easy. It doesn't get too hot and one setting I like is the option to change screen size. My two previous magnavox didn't allow me to do that and in short, it sucked. This new box runs cool, doesn't burn out (like my past two magnavox's) and it was cheaper than the other model. The only reason I put four stars on some attributes is because I am reserving some judgement. I haven't had it long. I would recommend this converter box to everyone.

HD TV Converter Box - What's it About?

On February 17, 2009, full power television broadcasting stations are mandated by the government to switch their signals to a digital format. Older televisions that only receive analog signals will be unable to receive new digital signals without being connected to cable or satellite systems, or they must be connected to an HD TV Converter Box.

The HD TV Converter Box will provide a digital to analog signal conversion that enables older televisions to receive new digital signals. Without this accessory box, there will be no reception. The government is providing special $40 coupons, two to a household until March 31, 2009 or until supplies run out, to offset the estimated $40 to $70 cost per box. The coupons are only good on certain converter boxes that must have parental control, alerts, auto-off, zoom, strength indicators, and energy saving and program guides.

With a converter box, older television sets will have digitally clear sights and sounds, making an old TV like new. Many boxes still have trouble synchronizing sound and video on certain channels. Back in 2003, the government decided that manufacturers should stop making analog television sets, and make digital capable sets. The reason was projections of a disappearing audience watching over the air broadcast signals. The Consumer Electronics Association estimates that by 2009, only about 6.8% of viewers will be watching over the air broadcasts, as most viewers now have cable or satellite services.

To apply for a government coupon to use when purchasing an HD TV Converter Box, you can apply online, or call the coupon program 24/7 at 1-888-388-2009, or mail in an application to PO BOX 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000. You can download an application from the internet site and fax it to 1-877-388-4632. TTY service is available for the deaf also. Complete information is available at the government website, www.dtv2009.gov. Coupons are only good for 90 days from their mailing date.

Only certain converter boxes are eligible for use with these coupons, but the list is very long. It can be found here: Coupon Eligible Converter Boxes: [https://www.ntiadtv.gov/cecb_list.cfm]. The coupons look like a store gift card, and can only be used on eligible boxes.

The government decided it is in the public interest to change to digital broadcast signals to free up the broadcast spectrum for public services. Space is needed for police, fire, and emergency services, and it will open more room for wireless channels. A digital broadcast station can broadcast multiple channels over the former single analog channel, offering more programming for the public. With the HD TV Converter Box, you can receive all those new HD channels.

Cable and satellite subscribers with analog televisions will still get reception through those companies without purchasing a new converter box. Battery run analog televisions will need to be hooked up to a converter box for reception. Without the converter box, or a new television that already contains an internal digital system, there will be no reception over the air from full power broadcast stations.

Check Out GE 24775 Quantum HDTV Antenna for $23.00

GE 24775 Quantum HDTV Antenna Review

I spent a couple of days researching and purchasing antennas and was on my way to giving up. I started off purchasing the RCA-Indoor Off-Air HDTV Antenna from Best [...], because the customer reviews on Best Buy and Amazon were pretty impressive. I eagerly brought my rabbit ears home, only not to get one channel. Upon moving my TV everywhere but outdoors, I scanned my antenna for the umpfteenth time, and didn't get not one channel. I promptly returned the rabbit ears to the Best Buy store, and decided to do a bit more research.

I ran across a pretty educational website, [...], where they say that we're better off with outdoor antennas rather than indoor. They also mentioned that if rabbit ears don't work in your home, chances are amplified indoor antennas will not work either. They recommended the Antennas Direct 91XG Uni-directional HDTV Antenna and the Terk HDTVO Amplified HDTV Antenna based on my area... both are outdoor antennas. So, I thought I'd settle on an outdoor antenna even though I lived in an apartment. I talked to a knowledgeable friend who told me that my outcome might be the same with the outdoor antennas depending on the interference around me. I was sooo frustrated. I almost felt like succumbing to cable. But, my internals wouldn't let me do it.

I trudged back out to the stores, first to Radio Shack where the prices were not to my liking, and then to Target. I figured I'd give indoor antennas one more try. They had very little to choose from. So, I blindly snatched a GE Amplified Indoor Quantum Antenna.

The installation was quick and simple. I turned on and configured the settings on my TV, so that it would scan for channels. I had no ambition for success. But, behold! My TV scanned 20 channels! I didn't need anymore than that. All the channels were perfect! I didn't have to adjust the GE antenna for any of the 20 channels! Each channel I turned to were perfect and crisp!

I must admit, this bland looking antenna does not blend in with my decor. But, who cares?! It works and I'm sticking with.

My meager advice: Learn as much as you can about digital antennas. The education will help you make excellent choices. Please visit the website I mentioned ([...]). But, take all of these reviews, including expert reviews, with a grain of salt. Choose a digital antenna based on where you live, not just on reviews. Take apartments into consideration (What floor you live on, how many taller buildings...) It's all about the geography versus the nearby or distant stations.

Not once during my research did I read anything about the GE Amplified Indoor Quantum Antenna. Instead, I was going with what the experts and other customer's experienced. But, the one they didn't mention is the one that worked for me.

Do your research, and get the one that's tailored to your geography. I wish you success in your digital antenna search!

Does not perform well. - Martin Politick - Montreal
This powered antenna only performs slightly better then regular cheap rabbit hears.
If you observe the product, in the middle, there is a cheap extensible antenna that needs to stick out.
In the picture it is retracted, so if your plan is not to have one of those, don't buy the product.
The blue LED light is disturbingly bright at night. We have it in our bedroom and I had to put a sticker on it.

Good for digital TV - J. Smith - Oregon
Yes, I am cheap particularly about television and decided long ago I wasn't wasting money purchasing it. Despite living in the woods in rural Oregon and under a hillside, I am able to receive ABC, NBC, and two PBS stations using indoor rabbit ears with a converter box. And that's enough news and TV entertainment for me. Digital TV has altered reception, however. A week or so ago, about 15 minutes before the Preakness Horse Race was to begin, my NBC TV reception died. Intent on seeing the race and after fooling with the rabbit ears antenna for about 10 minutes, I hauled my box TV to four different locations in the house and back again with a broken bone in my foot, no less, so you know how desperate I was to reestablish reception. But no luck. I wanted to watch that two minute horse race and, of course, I didn't. The local NBC station disappeared from my set for days. I did some internet shopping, investigating antennas designed for digital reception, but with 3 stars, I wasn't about to order this antenna by mail. A few days later, however, I found the antenna at the local Bimart store for under so decided to give it a try. I could easily take it back if it didn't work out. The antenna was easy to set-up... well, after I got it right side up, the little walls notched together properly, and plugged in. With its single antenna placed at the window, NBC reappeared at last and all other channels came in as well. I've had for five days, now, have lost no reception and have not needed to reposition the antenna at all -- a frustrating activity with the rabbit ears and almost always necessary in the past when I changed stations. The only thing I don't like is the little blue light signaling power going to the antenna. I have the antenna plugged into an power strip and now turn the strip off each night thereby turning off the annoying light.

Succesful - L. D. Cruz - Reynosa, Mexico
This was actually requested from a friend who lives in Mexico City so it must be really really good.

Great Price Sabrent TV-PC85 for $32.99

Sabrent PC to TV Converter Box Review

I bought this unit so I could watch Netflix on my older RCA flat screen tv. My only connections on the tv are rca and s-video. My computer only has a VGA output for 1 monitor. Upon receiving this unit, I hooked it up and switched the two small white toggle swithces on its' side into the down position as advised in Amazon's reviewers recomendations.
The unit fired up great without a hitch. My Sabrent unit has a resolution of 1024x726 which isn't fantastic but with the s-video connection, the netflix plays fine. This unit comes with a VGA cable to make the transition to your computer without needing to purchase an extra cable.
Audio is not included or allowed for but no big deal. I picked up an adapter at Radio shack which splits the 3.5mm audio output of my computer into two RCA female connectors. This was a very easy solution. After several hours of continued use, the unit becomes only slightly warm. Also, there are six small buttons on the front of this unit which makes it very easy to customize the picture on your tv. There is a zoom button and a full menu of customizing options. The buttons work by pushing multiple times or by holding depressed.
I wasn't expecting this unit to be so adjustable. In addition, I am able to use my monitor at the same time so if I need to check e-mail during a movie, I can reduce the screen size and browse away.
If you are looking for a cheap solution to play netflix or videos from your computer onto your older tv, this unit is a great inexpensive solution. The other great aspect of this unit is that it is small enough to transport virtually anywhere you may want to connect to a television. Since my recent purchase, I've purchased a new HD tv so I no longer need to use this unit but I have become quite attached to it and have it handily srored in it's origial box so I can bring it along to my friends and relatives homes to view videos in thier homes. I have been offered full price to sell this to people who have seen it work but I have no intention of parting with it. It's a great little unit and one of my better purchases. Amazon reviewers do a great job of informing potential buyers of all of their products.
I have made several purchases from amazon this year and so far, I haven't been disappointed even once. Many thanks to the buyers who take the time to share their thoughts on their purchases. It's greatly appreciated.

Didn't really do what I bought it for - A. C. Shrouf - Santa Rosa, CA United States
I could see how this would be good to show pictures on your TV screen...but I wanted to watch videos on my TV through my laptop. I got the picture ok, but no sound. Would have had to buy extra cables for the sound. Gave up. Now it's in my goodwill box...

Inexpensive and Works Great! - Greg F. - New York City
For a total of including 2 extra cables this little unit works great. I use it to connect my Mac G4 iBook to my 27" TV. The image was basically right on when it first came up. I love tweeking things so went right in to the menu and adjusted position, brightness, contrast, saturation and the like (it's got more) and got a really good image that fits near perfectly. So my focus was to view movies and photos on the TV. It works amazingly well. I'm pretty surprised based on some of the negative reviews here. For my purposes and the money spent, it couldn't be better. Awesome!

Spend the Money on a Better Converter - RocketMan -
Got this product to connect an older VGA desktop to our HDTV. It was rather simple to connect, but the image on the TV kept scrolling at very fast speeds and was worthless for viewing anything. In addition, the product also seemed damaged right out of the box. The plate around the menu buttons was creased as if bent. Not a major issue, but probably indicative of the overall quality of the product. I plan on returning this and investing in a better converter.

Fantastic - Matt K. - Derby, KS USA
This device works great. Coupled with a y-cable for audio. I can play movies or stream online video directly on my TV now. I'm also able to play my PC games on the TV. As has been said you won't be able to use this for reading documents or text on web pages. It didn't ship with the s-video cable but I didn't plan on using it anyway.
